Mr. George Edwin Houck, better known as "Edwin", age 89, of West Jefferson passed away Wednesday morning, January 2, 2019 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at 3:00pm at Bethany United Methodist Church with Rev. Dan Money officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethany Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00-3:00pm at Bethany United Methodist Church fellowship hall. The family will be meeting at the home place also. Mr. Houck was born in Ashe County on August 4, 1929 to the late Ross Dixon and Ann Houck. In his younger years, Edwin worked at a sawmill with his father. He worked as the Parts Manger at John Cook Subaru and managed and was part owner of Gentry & Houck Building Supply. He also worked as the bookkeeper for Ray's Drug Store. He was the oldest and biggest Duke fan. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a loving father; he will be missed by all. Mr. Houck is survived by a son, Rick Houck and wife, Pam, of West Jefferson; a daughter, Alice Collins-Sharpe and husband, Dennis, of West Jefferson; four grandchildren Suzanne Randolph and husband, Tim, of West Jefferson, Mary Ann Collins, of Durham, Mandy Lambert and husband, Del, of Lincolnton and Meredith Houck and husband, Matt Brikley, of Washington, DC; four great-grandchildren Will, Anna, Chandler and Lincoln; one step grandchild, 5 step great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Wynona Hodges, of Baltimore, MD, Rose Cook, of Boone and Davia Cook, of Warrensville; a caregiver, Cindy Silver, of Crumpler; a furry cat, George; several nieces and nephews also survive.
