It was 39 years ago today (May 25) that my husband and I met Ruth and Joe. We had married in Columbia, SC, the day before, and drove to Shatley Springs for our honeymoon. On Sunday morning, we drove into Jefferson to find a church to attend. We stopped at a local diner to get some coffee, and asked if a Nazarene church was in the area. The young lady told us of the group meeting nearby in a store. When we entered the building, Joe was playing his harmonica (and the piano, as I recall), and my husband, also a harmonica player, was delighted. The hymn that was played and sung that morning was "Come and Dine". Our friendship with the Stancliffs began that morning, and though we usually saw them only on our annual anniversary visit to the area, we kept in touch. Ruth was faithful to send anniversary and Christmas cards, and was so attentive to our two daughters when they joined us on our NC trips. Always hospitable and gracious, she epitomized Christian charity and love. A few years after we met Ruth, we discovered that one of our neighbors had been a friend and classmate of hers, and that was another connection we had with Ruth. My late husband attended Joe's funeral, and later we met Erwin when they visited on their way to Florida. I appreciate so much, Madelyn, your letting me know of your dear mother's passing. I look forward to seeing your mother again. May you be comforted by precious memories and by the grace of our Lord.

Ruth was our next door neighbor in Morganton, NC for many years. She was always a kind lady with a gentle spirit. We will always remember her sharing her kindness with us and know she is with God whom she loved.
