John:
About 3 years ago I came to your home during one of Ashe County's artist studio tours. I arrived late; everyone else had left. I knocked on your door to ask when I could come back, but you were kind enough to invite me in. Cynthia showed me her paintings and her studio, and the 3 of us talked for awhile. Cynthia's light shown like a beacon. I could see and feel what a special person she was. Her kindness, generosity and enthusiasm were abundant as she spoke of the things she loved to do. I thought her paintings were beautiful and joyful, just like she was. I will never forget her. God blessed her and you too, John, by putting her in your life.

My heart smiles and aches equally as I can only imagine yours may. I literally can close my eyes and her that wonderfully infectious giggle. A child once told me, " when someone you love dies, you don't stop loving them, you just have to do it different". I love you different Cynthia.

I’m not sure that any of us at Mountain Hearts can adequately express what Cynthia meant to us and our members. She was a BOLT of light. A presence in the room. A true gift from God to everyone who knew her. She was loved. She was admired. She was appreciated. She will be deeply missed by her Mountain Hearts coworkers and members.

John, Gov, my therapy dog got to know Cynthia while we visited Ashe Memorial on Thursday’s. Some of those Thursdays were when Cynthia would have hospital days which she demanded for you to take time for yourself. I mention that because you two must have such a love affair and always are looking out for each other. During those visits your beautiful wife was my therapy, yes mine, she taught me so much about life, life’s gifts, challenges and how to handle them, positive attitudes, educate yourself, others and be a spokesperson for others. She always told me it’s not about the “I” it’s about the people now and the future. Cynthia never gave up hope, what an incredible women. I truly am blessed to have met and spent time with your beautiful wife on one of my Thursdays. Cynthia is an example of why I do what a Gov and I do. Prays and warm thoughts be with you always. PS, Gov never left her side. Love, Pam Guion & Governor the Therapy Dog

Cynthia was an authentic human. She put her heart into all of her passions. What an inspiration for us all to see what love, passion, creativity, and compassion can weld. Zumba with Cynthia asked of us to follow the steps of a true dancer and choreographer. By concentrating on following her for every second, I could feel like a semblance of that dancer. (Only true in my mind, though.) And she led us in such great work-outs that magically took the drudgery out of exercise for me.
I am looking at a painting of hers at the moment, realizing that she continues to touch so many. Thank you, Cynthia and thank you, John.
love,
Jennifer Gardiner

What a lovely tribute... Cynthia's spirit is all over it!
Sending love, blessings and prayers for peace to Cynthia's family. Over the years, we talked a lot about family and how important our relationships were to each of us. Cynthia loved each and every one of you. John and Heather-the two of you were her world and her love for you is unsurpassed.
For Debra and I, Cynthia was our intelligent, tenacious, giggly, super organized, beautiful energizer bunny friend, who we loved dearly. We shared good times and lots of laughs as well as life's ups and downs. Our 35 year friendship speaks for itself.
While we are sad at her passing, we are glad that we shared a special connection-a forever friendship that will last for eternity... Love, Claudia & Debra

Together we traveled the world albeit from her chair in the setting of a hospital room, we were in Paris, France... at a bistro enjoying the cheeses of the region and wines.
In Italy the olives, more cheeses and peasant loaves of bread in the vineyards of olde....
The spicy mustards of Spain accompanied by the choicest cuts of beef.....we soared over Turkey in a balloon and always our visit before we settled in for the evening, ended with music and dance.
Cynthia, dear friend I share my travels with you in my heart, as colorful as your paintings and your gift of love, you taught me to never stop dancing.

Although I hadn't seen Cynthia much in the past few years I still counted her as one of my best friends. For years she 'did' my nails and we talked about almost everything. She and John were such good friends to me through thick and thin. I thought her paintings were beautiful and she was so talented she could do almost anything. She was so close to her daughter, Heather. I remember picking up Heather and Holly from basketball camp at Ashe Central. Heather was about 9 and when she and Holly came out, Heather was loaded down with trophies. Cynthia said she had no idea that Heather would get anything. We also talked some about God and Christianity so I feel good about her future. I hope to be with her someday but for now I will miss her presence here. I love you, Cynthia!
