Obituary of Ernest Goin Blevins
Mr. Ernest Goin Blevins, age 95, of Jefferson passed away Sunday morning, September 6, 2020 at the home of his son Michael & Faye Blevins, Fleetwood, NC.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at 2:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Elledge, Rev. Andy Watson and Minister Danny Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery with military rites. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral service.
Mr. Blevins was born in Damascus, VA on November 17, 1924, the son of Samuel Lawrence and Creecy Lou Howell Blevins. Ernest was raised up in the Silas Creek Community of Ashe County; he attended Landmark and Healing Springs Schools. He married Marie Darnell on September 17, 1943 in Elkton, Maryland. He was inducted into the United States Marines on November 1943 at the age of 19. He was transferred overseas on May 1, 1944 and arrived at Pearl Harbor May 8th. He was present at Pearl Harbor when 1200 men were killed or wounded. The next day he was assigned to the Marshall Islands; these islands were badly needed to build airstrips to handle the huge B29 bomber that could strike the heart of Japan. On February 19th D-Day at Iwo Jima the skies were over cast, a dismal looking blue Monday, 24 hours after the Marines landed our casualties numbered more than 1500 killed and wounded. The battle raged for 36 days. On Friday, Feb 23rd the Marines raised Old Glory atop Suribachi. That was such a beautiful sight for the soldiers.
When Ernest returned from the military, he began his life in Ashe County again: 1974-1987 he and Marie owned the Christian Book Store in West Jefferson. He was a member of Shelter Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and taught Sunday School.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, of 66 years, Iva Marie Darnell Blevins; two brothers, R.F. Blevins and Norval Davis.
Mr. Blevins is survived by: a son, Ernest Michael Blevins and wife, Faye, of Fleetwood; two grandchildren, Robert Michael Blevins and wife, Jennifer, of West Jefferson, Lisa Watson and husband, Andy, of Deep Gap, NC; five great-grandchildren, Alexis Higgins and husband, Adam of Massachusetts, Robert Austin Blevins of New York, Caleb Watson and wife, Holly; Luke Watson and wife Katie; Benjamin Watson all of Deep Gap, NC; seven great, great-grandchildren, Liam, Bram and Finn Higgins; Cade and Nash Watson; Isabelle Watson.
