William Jewel Underwood better known as "Bill" age 88 of West Jefferson, died Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Funeral Services will be held on Monday at 2:00 P.M. at the Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church with Rev. Billie Robinson and Rev. John Elledge officiating. Burial will follow in the Advance Cemetery in Ferguson, NC. The family will receive friends on Monday at 1:00P.M. until 2:00P.M. prior to the funeral at the Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church. Mr. Underwood was born in Iva, South Carolina to Arlander Clarence and Mary Magdalene Huckaby Underwood on November 5th, 1921 Bill attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated from Appalachian State University where he played football for the Mountaineers. He later served as president of the Yosef Club. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. Bill spent his career in education. He taught and coached at Coolomee High School, Ferguson High School, and Millers Creek High School. He retired from Fairplains Elementary School where he served as principal. He is survived by his wife;Joann Norris Underwood of West Jefferson; one son,Willie Underwood of Ferguson, NC; one daughter Lynn Underwood of Ferguson, NC; one Step-daughter Sarah Stroud and husband Jerry of Elkin; one stepson, Charles Norris of Todd; one brother, Pete Underwood of Waterloo, SC; one sister Dorothy James of Forest City, NC; five Grandchildren,Tad Underwood, Nathan Underwood, Erin Underwood, Ellie McCabe,Sarah McCabe; three Step-grandchildren, Daniel Blevins, Joe Norris, Wade Norris five Great-Grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. William was preceded in death by one brother Neillan Underwood and his first wife Betty Ferguson. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: High Country Healthcare Hospice, P.O.
