Mr. William Hagy South, Sr., age 74, of West Jefferson passed away Saturday morning, June 19, 2010 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 2pm at Beaver Creek Christian Church with Rev. Jim Dawes officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00pm on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Boone Family Funeral Home. Mr. South was born in Ashe County on Monday, July 8, 1935 to the late William Howard and Effie McNeill South. He served in the United States Army. After the Army, he retired from Skyline Telephone Company, where he worked as a lineman. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Houck South; a son, J.R. of West Jefferson; three brothers, Bower South, of Deep Gap, NC, Wayne South, of Jefferson and Danny South, of Newland; two sisters, Lessie Severt and Wanda Austin, both of West Jefferson; a grandson, Joshua R. South; several nieces and nephews also survive.
