Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Jane Flegle Winters, age 89, of West Jefferson passed away Thursday evening, February 10, 2011 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 14, 2011 at 4:00pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Thom Burleson officiating. Mrs. Winters was born in Fremont, Ohio on Thursday, October 20, 1921 to the late Bernie and Bertha Allison Flegle. She graduated with honors from nursing school. She was a Register Nurse. After marrying Ben Winters, they led a full life together of 68 years. They traveled to Alaska after retiring and travel to Europe to sing with their church choir in cathedrals and churches on continent and England. They also worked as hostess for the Billy Graham Crusades in Amsterdam. She was a member of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She was a member of the Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church in Ashe County. She is survived by her husband, Bernard (Ben) Winters; a son, Gregory Winters and wife, Sue, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; two daughters, Karen Reynolds and husband, Jim, of Laurel Springs and Marla Powell and husband, Bruce of Glendale Springs; a brother, Richard Flegle of Minneapolis, Minnesota; five grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
