Obituary of Edna Hinkle Miller
Edna Hinkle Miller passed away on Saturday March 05, 2011 at Villages of Ashe Assisted Living Center in West Jefferson.
Edna was born to the late Millard P. and Lucy Stinson Hinkle in Greenbrier County, Frankford, West Virginia. She married J. Ivan Miller in Baltimore, Maryland on March 10, 1945. She and her husband of 64 years lived in West Jefferson throughout their lives.
She is survived by her step son J. I. Miller Jr. and his wife Noel of West Jefferson; two nieces, Gail Hinkle Bleacher of Quarryville, Pa.; Joyce Hinkle Poe of White Sulphur Springs; W.Va.; one nephew, Arnie Hinkle also of White Sulphur Springs; 6 step grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband, J. Ivan Miller; step daughter, Judith Lundgren; step son, John Frank Miller and three brothers, Robert, Clifton and Bernard Hinkle.
Edna is remembered as a lady of many wonderful hats; she loved style and fashion and presented herself elegantly. She always presented her age as just past twenty nine. When asked how she was doing, she responded with a smile, "top drawer".
She professed her faith in Christ and was baptized in 1938. She has been a member of Mount Jefferson Presbyterian Church since January of 1949 where she has been active throughout her life. She served her church in many roles including as President of the Women, Adult Sunday School teacher, Circle Bible Chair, Youth Sunday School teacher, Elder-Clerk of the Session. She served the Presbytery and Synod of North Carolina in numerous leadership roles. She received the honorary Life Membership from the Salem Presbytery and the Synod of North Carolina.
In civic affairs, she was an officer of the Ashe County Mental Health Association, the Friends of the Library and a board member of Appalachian Regional Library. She was a Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, the highest office of the organization. She was proud of her fifty year pin.
She was recognized by the State of North Carolina at the regional Governors Conference for her role in Leadership and Development of Women.
Edna was a direct descendant of the Sydenstricker family who were Presbyterian Missionaries to China, one of whom is the late Pearl Sydenstricker Buck, the noted and famous Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Good Life.
A graduate of the Huntington Business College, Huntington, she was employed as a secretary at the Phoenix Chair Company in West Jefferson from 1945 to 1964.
The graveside service will be held on Tuesday March 8th at 1 o'clock at Ashe Lawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, entombment will follow.
