Obituary of Hoke Alexander Wagoner
Mr. Hoke Alexander Wagoner, age 97, of Jefferson passed away Sunday morning, October 23, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 11:00am at First Baptist Church of West Jefferson with Rev. Michael Lea, Rev. Ken Morris and Dr. Calvin Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Wagoner was born in Ashe County on Friday, December 19, 1913 to the late Jeremiah Henry and Lucy Dixon Wagoner. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a mail carrier, a beef cattle and tobacco farmer for many years. He was an avid golfer, scoring his first hole in one at the age of 91. He enjoyed playing at Mountain Aire Golf Course. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with his church family.
He was also preceded in death by two wives, Lenna Gambill in 1973 and Virginia Mae Miller on September 3, 2008; three brothers, Amos Wagoner, Robert Wagoner and James Wagoner; three half-brothers, Dwight Wagoner, Eugene Wagoner and Wing Wagoner; two half-sisters, Pressie Jenkins and Myrtle Hege.
Mr. Wagoner is survived by a son, Hoke A. Wagoner, Jr. and wife, Anne, of Conover; a step son, Terry Williams and wife, Debbie, of West Jefferson; three granddaughters, Stacy Cliff, of Sanford, Ashley Bowers, of Crumpler and Kendall Wagoner, of Greensboro; two great-granddaughters, Adeline Bowers and Lanie Bowers; a great-grandson, Richie Cliff; three step grandsons, Trathan Williams, Brady Williams and Michael Laney; two step granddaughters, Autumn Williams and Cynthia Moore; two step great-grandsons Andy Moore and Aiden Moore; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family requests no food or flowers memorials may be made to: First Baptist Church, PO Box 180, West Jefferson, NC 28694 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
The family will be meeting at 283 Hoke Wagoner Road in Crumpler.
