Obituary of Frank Levern Combs

Mr. Frank Levern Combs died January 5, 2009 at his home in High Point at the age of 85. He was born Tuesday, May 15, 1923, the son of Edward and Laura Thompson Combs in the Tuckerdale Community in Ashe County. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, one sister and two brothers. He is survived by his wife Helen Gilley Combs, one daughter, Gail Combs Suggs and husband, Wendell, of High Point, NC. Also surviving are his two beloved grandsons, Josh Suggs and his wife, Jennifer of Charlotte, NC and Mark Suggs, of High Point, NC. He also has one sister, Treva Branson, of Galax, VA, three sisters-in-law, Mabel Gilley Jones, of Midway, NC, Sue Gilley Wheeler and husband, Norman, of Greensboro and Muriel Wallace Combs, of New Bern, NC. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 1276th Combat Engineers Battalion. He saw action with hard fighting on the Elbe River, the Rhine River and the Roer River. He received a Bronze Star for distinguishing himself by meritorious service in enemy artillery fire. He was a member of the Lansing American Legion #0275. He was a retired furniture upholsterer with the Schoonbeck division of Henredon Furniture of High Point, NC. In 1976 he gave his life to the Lord Jesus and was baptized in the Baptist Faith. He loved his family and enjoyed watching his grandsons grow up. He was able to do a lot of things with them. He appreciated his many friends in High Point as well as the friends here in Ashe County, especially the Hardee's group. The funeral will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel, 2005 Mt. Jefferson Road in West Jefferson, NC at 12:00 noon by Rev. Larry Shepherd and the Rev. David Blackburn. Music will be provided by Jimmy McNeill. The family will receive friends from 10:00am to 12:00 noon prior to the funeral. Burial will follow at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens, 3470 US Hwy. 221 North, Jefferson, NC with military honors. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Hospice of the Piedmont for their countless hours of care and concern for Frank. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donation be made to: Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262 or to Tuckerdale Baptist Church Building fund, c/o Jean Key, PO Box 93, Lansing, NC 28643. The family will be meeting at the home place 210 Gentry Street in Jefferson, NC.
