Obituary of George Andrea Rembert
George Andrea Rembert Jr., 74, died February 19, 2014 at his home near Lansing in Ashe County, NC. Born January 18, 1940 in Charlotte, NC, he was the son of the late George A. Rembert and Margaret Edith Hice. He graduated from Central High School, an outstanding student and man of many talents . As an actor in Charlotte during the sixties he played Hamlet, Curly in "Oklahoma", and Gaston in "Gigi" where he met his wife, Betty, who played Gigi. He established Industrial Construction Company in Charlotte, becoming a skillful salesman, estimator, and business manager. He learned to pilot a Cessna 172, flying up and down the East coast for his company, until one close call too many convinced him to end that venture. However his stories of those days have become legends, told and retold to great delight at family gatherings.
In 1969 George and Betty sold the business and their home, took courage in hand, and set forth to see something of the world. George traveled across northern Europe, Russia, and Poland for three months until reaching Vienna, Austria, where he was joined by his wife and four children. They lived there for two years, an experience fondly recalled and treasured. Returning to the U.S. in 1971, they bought a farm in Ashe County, learned to garden, raise pigs, and grow tobacco. A fire in 1975 put an end to homesteading and George returned to the construction business. After a series of stops, he joined the Bobbitt Group in Raleigh in 1983 as business manager. Here he implemented the company's entry into computers and negotiated its conversion to an employee owned company, leading to great success and growth for Bobbitt.
After retirement in 1991 he returned to Ashe County, built a home, and concentrated on photography. In 2009 he became the driving force behind the Ashe Camera Club which became a source of inspiration and motivation to scores of talented photographers. His ready wit, humor, and expertise earned him a reputation as a 'soft-hearted curmudgeon'. His creativity remained strong until the end. He co-founded CatchLight Gallery, a showcase for photographic art, and as his final project, published a book, "Bobbitt: The First Sixty Years".
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty R. Rembert; one son, George A. Rembert, III of Lansing, two daughters, Andi Rountree of Symrna, GA, and Maria Whaley of Lansing; one sister, Susan Sparks Watkins of Richmond, VA; one brother, Richard Hice Rembert of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by one son, Richard Mark Rembert.
