Obituary of Allen Patterson Watson

Allen Patterson Watson, 62 of West Jefferson, NC went to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 while surrounded by his family at home. He had battled Prostate Cancer for 8 years that had metastasized to the bone. Born November 20, 1945 in Boston, Mass. He was the son of Margaret B. Watson of West Jefferson and the late Charles Wake Watson. He graduated from Hampton High School, Hampton, VA in 1964 and served his country in the US Army in the 1st Calvary Division, Air Mobile in the Vietnam War earning the Air Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters, while flying over 100 air missions over hostile territory including the Battle of La Drang Valley. He also earned the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with Device (1960), Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation (Army). Returning to the states he earned his college degree from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA while working full time on nuclear subs at the Newport News Shipyard, Newport News, VA. He then entered a career in nuclear energy working at several nuclear power plants across the US, retiring from Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plants Constellation Energy, Lusby, MD. He was very church and community oriented serving on many church committees and community boards before retiring to his beloved mountain home in 2003. He was a member of Mt Vernon Baptist Church, Boone, NC serving as a devoted Adult Sunday School Teacher. He was an avid Model Railroader modeling the C&O (HO Gauge) for 35 years. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 28 years, Connie Caperton Watson and one daughter, Amanda Marie Watson of West Jefferson, one brother Charles Wake Watson Jr. and wife Barbara of La Porte, TX and one step-brother Larry Watson of Winston-Salem, NC. A viewing will be held at Boone Family Funeral Home, West Jefferson, NC on Saturday, July 12th from 6:00-9:00pm. Service will be held on Sunday, July 13th at 3:00pm at Mt Vernon Baptist Church, Boone, NC. Prior to the service a viewing will be held from 1:30-2:30pm in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow at the Blue Ridge Baptist Cemetery on Park Vista Rd, West Jefferson. Donations may be made to the Hospice of West Jefferson, or the Building Fund at Mt Vernon Baptist Church, 3505 Bamboo Rd, Boone, NC 28607.
